The Russian Academy of Arts was initially founded in 1724 by Peter the Great and was meant together with the Russian Academy of Sciences to constitute a single Academy of Sciences and Arts, in 1757 it was reorganized by the Empress Elizabeth in an independent Imperial Academy of Arts. Catherine the Great has set the Academy’s priorities - «painting, sculpture, architecture, guidance». During the XVIII and XIX centuries the Academy’s activity played a very important role in developing the Russian fine arts and architecture. We shouldn’t underestimate the Academy’s influence on contemporary Russian art and that of the ХХ century, it being the accumulative centre of its traditions and a place where many generations of talented artists were brought up. Today the Russian Academy of Arts accumulates the best creative forces in Russia. Among the academics, correspondent members and honorable members of the Academy one can find well-known masters, painters, architects and designers, who represent all the aspects of contemporary Russian art. |
